Our first and last group dance lesson

Since Rick and I love to country and western dance, I thought it would be fun to take some lessons to learn some new moves. I've been bugging Rick for months and I found a nightclub that has group lessons for $5.00 per person and they were starting a new advanced Shuffle series on July 2. Rick finally agreed.

I was so excited. I had visions of us twirling around the dance floor, the stars of the class, showing off all our new dance steps. WRONG! The first move we learned was actually something we do all the time, but when you break it down step by step, we didn't even realize it was something that we already knew. We kept getting our hands tangled up, the instructor said we were dancing too close together, (Rick's philosophy is what is the fun of dancing of you can't hold your woman close), and basically didn't know our left foot from our right. Rick was ready to leave after about 10 minutes.

I know that we are fairly good dancers and I couldn't understand why we were having such a hard time when everyone else seemed to be picking it up easily. I think the instructor sensed our frustration because at one point she asked everyone who had taken the class before to raise their hand, and it was most of the class! Also, this was the third in a series of classes -- basic, intermediate and advanced. Most everyone else in the class had attended the other classes as well so knew what she was talking about when she said "waist wrap", "neck wrap", "guy around". Most of these steps are ones we already do, we just don't have a name for them.

I would have continued with the series but there is no way I'll ever get Rick to go back. Fortunately, I had an inkling that Rick might not like the group lessons and had a backup plan. I had found a place that does private lessons. More expensive of course, but Rick was willing to do just about anything to not have to go back to another group lesson! I'll report back on the outcome of our private lessons to be scheduled soon! Maybe we'll learn something new like the Cha Cha or Tango. Ha Ha Ha. Dancing with the Stars, here we come!
